The table
has seen many things,
engagement rings
and christenings,
formal meals
and a lonely dinner,
caviar, champagne,
and fried liver.
It has creaked and groaned
under energetic efforts at procreation,
it has stood the test of time
for many a generation.
vinegar, olive oil, spilt wine
lend patina to its surface wide,
and childish fingers have smeared unmentionables
on its scarred and pitted underside.
Once costly walnut,
polished to a sheen,
pride of the dining room,
then a change of scene,
to the back kitchen,
now a chopping block,
or fish 'n chips for tea
at five o'clock.
The garden shed is now
its final resting place,
under countless coats of paint,
planters and substrate sacks replace
fine crystal and silver,
and table cloths of lace,
creaking, its joints coming undone,
the table knows its time has finally come.
As it disintegrates
usefulness dwindling
the once proud
centrepiece
anonymously,
ignominiously,
is used as kindling.
