There's a city somewhere
I saw it in a dream
where the trees are shady
and the grass is green
laughter in the parks
and the pavements clean
fountains gush and children play
on empty streets
by night and day
sun, rain and snow
all have their seasons
people smile or cry
are happy or sad
know good from bad
suffer loss or pain
but rarely complain
live and let die
they all have their reasons
but hunger and cold have vanished
inequality has been banished
no homelessness, no depression
no lawlessness, no aggression.
I wake and struggle to explain
to those around me
my vision, hope, optimism
hesitant decision
to live in such a city
I'm met with apathy, scepticism
barely concealed derision
my search will be in vain
more's the pity.
