Diddy's performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held a deeply sentimental significance as he dedicated the set to the late Kim Porter, the mother of his four sons. The rapper, who was presented with the Global Icon Award, delivered an extended performance during which he was joined by his son, King Combs, to perform several tracks, including "It's All About the Benjamins," "I Need a Girl," and "Mo Money Mo Problems." Additionally, Yung Miami and Keyshia Cole made appearances on stage alongside Diddy.
Speaking with ET's Rachel Smith backstage, Diddy expressed the importance of the performance, saying, "Tonight was special. We're doing this for [King Combs'] mother; it's the first one we've done for his mom, and we were thinking about her."
He continued, revealing, "This was always a dream of hers—to be on stage together in a big way, at such a globally televised event." Diddy also took a moment to express his pride in his son, telling him, "I'm proud of you," and they shared an emotional embrace.
King Combs is the second of four children Diddy shares with the late Kim Porter, who sadly passed away in 2018. Diddy is also the adoptive father of Porter's son Quincy from a previous marriage and shares twin daughters, D'Lila and Jessie James, with Porter. Diddy's daughter Chance, from his relationship with Sarah Chapman, was in attendance, as was his beloved mother, Janice, who showed her support.
King Combs shared his excitement about the joint performance, describing it as "amazing" and revealing, "I've been watching my pops since I was a kid." Diddy expressed that the family collaboration had been a long time coming, recalling how his son, from a young age, would passionately request to join him on stage during encores. Diddy added, "This is like our third time performing, but it's our biggest moment when he really, really, really held it down, and I'm proud of him."
Diddy's Global Icon performance was presented by the legendary Mary J. Blige, who referred to him as a "big brother" and highlighted the massive success of his Bad Boy Records, which has sold over 500 million albums worldwide. On stage, Diddy showcased his signature Diddy-bop and delivered a powerful rendition of his 1997 hit, "I'll Be Missing You." This marked Diddy's first performance at the VMAs since 2005.
