Here's what you should know about "1989 (Taylor's Version)."
Release Date: "1989 (Taylor's Version)" is set to drop on October 27th, the same date when the original album was released nine years ago. Swift shared her enthusiasm on X (formerly known as Twitter), exclaiming, "Surprise!! The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement to announce that my version of it will be out October 27th." She also expressed that "1989" is her "most FAVORITE rerecord I've ever done."
This re-recorded version of "1989" marks the fourth in Swift's catalog to be released as "Taylor's Version." This initiative started as a way for Swift to regain artistic control after the sale of her original master recordings in 2020, which she described as a loss of her life's work.
When announcing the re-recorded "Fearless" in February 2021, Swift explained her motivation on social media, emphasizing that artists should own their own work because they are the ones who truly understand their body of work.
"Fearless (Taylor's Version)" was released in April 2021, followed by "Red (Taylor's Version)" in November 2021, and "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)," originally from 2010, was released in July. All three albums quickly ascended to the top of the Billboard charts.
With "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" reaching No. 1 on the Billboard charts, Taylor Swift now holds the record for the female artist with the most No. 1 albums in chart history, surpassing Barbra Streisand's previous record of 11.
The original "1989" album, released in 2014, dominated the Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 consecutive weeks, featuring iconic tracks like "Shake It Off," "Blank Space," and "Bad Blood" (featuring Kendrick Lamar). "1989" remained in the Billboard Top 10 for its entire first year, a feat achieved by only five albums, and outsold the combined total of the next three biggest releases of 2014: Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour," Eric Church's "The Outsiders," and Coldplay's "Ghost Stories."
On the awards front, "1989" received a total of 10 Grammy nominations, including three for the album's first single, "Shake It Off," at the 57th Grammy Awards in 2015. In the 58th Grammy Awards in 2016, "1989" secured three major wins, including Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Music Video for "Bad Blood."
Bonus and Vault Tracks: Swift revealed on her website on September 13 that an exclusive bonus track will be available on the tangerine edition of the vinyl, which will be sold at Target stores on October 27. In addition, Swifties embarked on a virtual scavenger hunt on September 19, teaming up with Google to unveil her "From the Vault" tracks. To reveal the track titles, fans worldwide joined forces to solve 89 different puzzles. Once 33 million of these challenges are completed, the vault will be unlocked, unveiling the song titles.
