The Mean Girls movie musical is taking a different route to its release, opting for a theatrical debut rather than going straight to streaming as originally planned. The film, which is an adaptation of the Broadway musical based on Tina Fey's 2004 comedy, is set to hit theaters on January 12, 2024.
This exciting news coincides with the annual celebration of Mean Girls Day on October 3, a nod to the memorable scene in the 2004 film where the character Cady Heron reveals the date to her love interest, Aaron Samuels: "It's October 3rd."
The star-studded cast includes Angourie Rice as Cady Heron, stepping into the role originally played by Lindsay Lohan in 2004. Rice is joined by Reneé Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park, Connor Ratliff, and Jon Hamm.
Angourie Rice expressed her enthusiasm for the project, mentioning that she had a fantastic time working on the film, which had recently completed filming. She also acknowledged that while there will be inevitable comparisons between the musical and the original film, each interpretation is unique, as no two people perform the same role in precisely the same way.
Reneé Rapp reprises her role as Regina George in the film, having previously portrayed the character on Broadway. She is known for her work on Max's "The Sex Lives of College Girls" but will be leaving the series as a regular, making only a few appearances in the upcoming third season.
Rapp shared her excitement about being part of the Mean Girls adaptations, highlighting the significant impact the franchise had on her childhood and her generation, thanks to Tina Fey's visionary work.
